The Prelude & Object Of Giving – Part 3: Sermon By Apostle Gobanga

When Abram heard that [his nephew] had been captured, he armed (led forth) the 318 trained servants born in his own house and pursued the enemy as far as Dan. He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and attacked and routed them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. And he brought back all the goods and also brought back his kinsman Lot and his possessions, the women also and the people. After his [Abram’s] return from the defeat and slaying of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh, that is, the King’s Valley. Melchizedek king of Salem [later called Jerusalem] brought out bread and wine [for their nourishment]; he was the priest of God Most High, And he blessed him and said, Blessed (favored with blessings, made blissful, joyful) be Abram by God Most High, Possessor and Maker of heaven and earth, And blessed, praised, and glorified be God Most High, Who has given your foes into your hand! And [Abram] gave him a tenth of all [he had taken].

Genesis 14:14-20

Behold, I send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me. And the Lord [the Messiah], Whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; the Messenger or Angel of the covenant, Whom you desire, behold, He shall come, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the priests, the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord offerings in righteousness. Then will the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in ancient years. Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against the false swearers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, and who turn aside the temporary resident from his right and fear not Me, says the Lord of hosts.

For I am the Lord, I do not change; that is why you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My ordinances and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, How shall we return? Will a man rob or defraud God? Yet you rob and defraud Me. But you say, In what way do we rob or defraud You? [You have withheld your] tithes and offerings. You are cursed with the curse, for you are robbing Me, even this whole nation.

Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now by it, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer [insects and plagues] for your sakes and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine drop its fruit before the time in the field, says the Lord of hosts.

Malachi 3:1-11

Lack of giving is not a faith problem. It is lack of wisdom to steward resources.

You need to have a divine approach towards the resources God has given you and not an earthly approach.

The reason why God wants you to do works of righteousness is because you are righteous. It also pertains to giving.

Faith is as a result of the purpose of God but trust is as a result of the person of God.

Giving is living. Life is all about giving. How you live determines how you give. Understanding this will help you not to give amiss.

God wants us to be faithful administrators of not only things that pertains to the Kingdom of God but also each other.

Tithing is a Kingdom principle. It is not a law. Tithing is threefold. We tithe of our time and of our soul (on an appointed day of worship).

We also give a tithe of our lives. This kind of tithe is like a first fruit of your success. First fruit mentality purposes to set apart that which is the Lord’s. The opposite of it is a left-over mentality. It reflects on your heart.

The moment you earn a salary or get your pocket money, set aside your tithe immediately. Don’t begin to consider your needs first.

The principle of tithing is not limited by the context of the event – Abraham & Melchizedek. Principles remain constant.

When Abraham was giving his tithe, Melchizedek did not force Abraham to do so. Abraham did so willingly. His tithe was as a result of divine revelation.

In the Garden of Eden, the Tree of Good and Evil was not a bad tree. All that God created was good.

The Tree of Good and Evil belonged to God. It was a type of tithe set apart for Himself. That is why Adam and Eve were not to eat from it.

You must have the revelation from God that will inspire to be a giver. Sow into the Spirit of revelation to tap into the grace to function.

God sanctified the 7th day during creation as it is a tithe unto God set apart unto Himself. Sabbath means rest – from programs, etc – to spend with God.

Tithing means setting aside that which is most holy unto God.

You give as a result of love. Giving is a love issue and an act of worship.

Giving is sacrifice. You are subtracting a fraction of your heart, a fraction of your life unto God.

Tithing preceded its legislation in the Mosaic law as it was a principle in the Godhead Himself. God is a tither. He tithed of His Son before the foundation of the world was laid. He gave the best. Jesus was a tithe of tithes.

If you want to know how to tithe, look at how God tithed of His Son Jesus Christ before the foundation of the earth to restore humanity into fellowship with Him.

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord. And if a man wants to redeem any of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. And all the tithe of the herd or of the flock, whatever passes under the herdsman’s staff [by means of which each tenth animal as it passes through a small door is selected and marked], the tenth shall be holy to the Lord.

Leviticus 27:30-32

Malachi 3:1-11 – God was addressing how the people were robbing God by not tithing. God spoke judgment on their purpose.

Do not criticize of speak ill of a church service (or altar). When you give, your heart will be reflected in your giving and that altar will speak a curse upon you.

Restoration comes after purification. You need the revelation of why you are giving and to whom to purify & realign your mindsets on giving.

Types of tithe in Mosaic Law:

  1. Tithe to the Levites
  2. Tithe given to priesthood of Aaron
  3. Tithe given in the 3rd year to the widows & orphans

Tithe to the Levites remained after the Mosaic Law and the principle is applicable today to the ministers of the Gospel.

The principle of tithing was premeditated by God. It cannot be annulled because the historical setting is no longer in place.

Jesus urged that as a person who tithes, be a person of mercy and justice. God desires true compassion to back up your giving.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law—right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought [particularly] to have done, without neglecting the others.”

Matthew 23:23

If you live by one aspect of the law, you must live by the whole law. But it tithing is a principle, you live by all other principles of the Kingdom.

Jesus is preeminent over creation. Therefore, your tithes must be preeminent over all your other needs.

The principle of the 7th day of rest is how God wants us to enter rest from sin, struggle and sickness, etc. It is to prepare & usher us into our prophetic destiny.

The spirit of man belongs to God (He breathed into us). God desires us to dedicate our spirits to Him as a tithe.

Where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 6:20 (NKJV)

The tithing of the New Testament is a tithe to Christ (the High Priest) that is received by ministers of the Gospel on His behalf.

Abraham giving his tithes to Melchizedek was acknowledging the greatness of God in him. When you are tithing, you are connecting to purpose.

The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was because it had a purpose. That purpose was to test the obedience of Adam and Eve.

Tithing is not a donation. It is a devotion to God tied to the principle of covenant and connection with God.
