The Sovereignty Of God: Part 1 | INFEMI Sermon Series By Apostle Gobanga

The Sovereignty Of God – Part 1: Sermon By Apostle Gobanga

The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live.

Acts 17:24-26 (NRSV)

Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.

Psalm 115:3 (NRSV)

For I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.

Psalm 135:5-6 (NRSV)

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.

Revelation 4:11 (NRSV)

The conception of deity in the contemporary society is a miserable caricature. Even amongst those who identify as Christians/believers there is a blasphemous travesty of truth as regards to God. They say one thing about God and believe another.

The way people perceive God in this generation is that He is a very fussy being who fails to command respect in the society. He is seen as an object of pity rather than a Being who requires reverence.

He is presented as a God that is theoretical or an abstract notion of futility yet He is a God of all reality.

God has been seen as a figment of imagination and object of futility and yet God is a God of humanity. The way God has been presented to us is that He is doing all He can to save all humans.

People have a tendency of throwing all manner of blame to the devil and his workings. We hold him responsible for all the negative things in our lives that are contrary to our desires. Yet in so doing, we make the devil appear almighty and God ceases to be a Supreme Being in our lives.

When we say that God’s original plan of salvation of humanity has been displaced by sin, we are dethroning God. We are degrading Him to become a finite mortal being.

We live in an age of Humanism and New Age doctrines, which teach us that God has no power in our lives. We can checkmate God when we wish. When we begin to feel that man is a free moral agent and a determinant of his own destiny, we are saying that man has the ability of stripping God of His omnipotence.

It is important to understand what it means when we say that God is sovereign. The sovereignty of God is the supremacy and kingship of God. Besides Him, there is no other.

He has total control over the past, present and future of all His creation. God doesn’t fluctuate and He is not modulated by circumstances regardless of any changes that we go through globally.

There is nothing that happens outside the knowledge and control of God even where human activity is concerned. He is omniscient – all knowing.

All things are either caused by God or allowed by Him for His purpose through His perfect will and timing.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 (NRSV)

The purpose of God has accounted for all positive and negative things in your life now, in the past and in the future. The purpose of God must stand. It will not be held hostage by your mistakes or the negative things that take place in your life.

The purpose of God was founded in the womb of eternity through eternal wisdom. It precedes all things including the existence of earth and man.

The purpose of God is encoded in the word of God. We need to understand the heart and mind of God. The Spirit of revelation allows us to capture the heart and mind of God in Scripture.

Jesus is living word of God, the purpose of God. The Holy Spirit needs to show you the purpose of God in the scriptures and in His word.

God ordained purpose not Scripture. Without revelation, Scripture has no transformational power in our lives. We need to operate with the Spirit of revelation so as not to walk in fallacy or miss out on transformation. The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth – the purpose of God (who is Christ).

Christ’s vicarious work on the Cross has catered for every happenstance and circumstance in your life. Nothing happens outside of God’s control and purpose. The purpose of God i.e. Christ can never be aborted regardless of what happens in your life.

God may permit the devil to do certain things in our lives but He will never allow the devil or anyone to tamper with His purpose in your life. Same case applies to circumstances that aren’t necessarily demonic but have caused us pain & suffering.

The purpose of God carries the absolute power resident in Him. If you don’t understand the purpose of God, you will consider God impotent and powerless. Atheists, for instance, do not understand the purpose of God. A person that does not understand purpose is like a rolling stone that gathers no moss.

God will do everything to protect His purpose in your life, even allowing you to suffer because suffering has a prophetic purpose e.g. Christ’s death on the Cross was planned by God even before the foundation of earth.

There is wisdom in Christ you need to access to get a revelation of the purpose of God. You need to have a prophetic foresight to understand what the Spirit of God is saying to you according to His purpose and His perfect will.

The will of God is not just good and acceptable. It must stand the test of time. When God allows us to go through certain things, it is because He wants us to stand the test of time. God wants to condition you to have a broken heart and a contrite spirit. He wants to make sure we have testimonies not just stories. Because if you have not accessed the nature of Christ, no demon will listen to you. You must be able to speak from a place of authority and revelation.

If you have the same complaints today that you had in 2011, it shows that you are not growing. It shows a problem in your condition not your circumstance that God is trying to address.

Sovereignty characterizes the whole being of God – pertaining to His nature, humanity and works of creation. It captures everything about the attributes of God. God is sovereign in as far as all His attributes are concerned, even the exercise of His will. He exercises His power as, when and where He wills not when the situation demands.

The sovereignty of God is His rulership over all reality, veracity, truth and tangibility. There is a reality that comes from Him that only He has oversight over. That reality is you and I. It is His prophetic purpose over your life. Unless you are in tandem with Him, you will not attain to the fullness of the prophetic word and promise over your life; you will not access the reality of God you carry.

There is an aspect of tangibility that creation carries that is under the oversight of God. There are secret things about you that belong to God. The only way you become a partaker and beneficiary of these secret things is through fellowship, relationship and communion with Him. Some of these things may remain secret to you because we have no capacity to carry them or if by knowing them, we might abort purpose. In His sovereignty He will not disclose things to you. However, He still wants us to benefit from His secrets as we fellowship with Him.

God ensures the people He brings our way are raw and crude. He uses them to process us and deal with the issues in our heart such that we are aligned to Him. God has chosen to express Himself through that which is weak and foolish to man so that man doesn’t exalt himself in carnality.

When you fight the purpose of God, God will allow your circumstances and people to deal with you. The only thing that will move God is the purpose of God. When you are going through things, consider, what about purpose is God seeking to address in your life?

Creation including man is the reality of God that exists outside of God. But even so, He still has oversight over us.

There are certain mysteries of life that need you to be in partnership with God so as to be able to apply. You need to understand the purpose of creation before you can exercise any mandate over it.

There are also certain areas/provinces of creation e.g. in your partner or people in your workplace that are exclusively for God to have mandate over. Any attempt to manage these areas will cause frustration and confusion.

God will allow certain events to happen based on the natural laws He has ordained e.g. the law of gravity, breathing in and out, etc.

God disposes all creatures according to His good pleasure. His sovereignty acknowledges the existence of all beings that serve His prophetic purpose as well as His relations with these beings and their works.

When we declare that God is sovereign, we are declaring that He is Almighty and that none can thwart His purpose.

God’s rule of government is founded on fundamental truths we find in Scripture. God sets up kingdoms and overthrows empires as per His purpose. Any nation that walks in sin will experience reproach. In trying to be wise in their own eyes, nations end up destroying themselves.

God is the source of all things and the world exists because of His entire being. He is the only one with the absolute capability to guide creation to its meaningful end and into a place of fullness and completion.

God’s creativity seen in creation has nothing to do with chance, luck or randomness. Creation is a result of God’s purpose and decree. God wanted to start a family of sons that were to come from Adam and Eve’s multiplication to fill the earth. The entire human race was grafted into the seed of Adam.

The moral sovereignty of God over creation means God is to be obeyed not just because He is mighty but also because He is righteous. He judges nations based on His moral character. He is the source of all goodness and His holiness means that he is completely separated from iniquity.

God is separated from His creation and works beyond our human creation. He is transcendent. There are certain things about God that we cannot understand.

God’s purpose wants to bring creation to a place of fullness where we are in fellowship with Him. The Kingdom of God is God’s meaningful end. It is the end we are all working towards. Not a church or a denomination. The kingdom where everything comes under the authority of the Son.

Not everything that happens in our life is according to God’s perfect will. His permissive will allows us to exercise our free will and it allows certain aspects of nature to manifest.

The sovereignty of God must be distinguished from fate and destiny. Everything that happens in our lives has been predestined. Even that which is as a result of actions contrary to God’s will. Everything that happens in your life has been determined and scheduled by God. But we will still be held accountable for our actions and decisions.

We are taught from God’s word that we have freedom. Freedom means we must submit ourselves to the sovereignty of God. It comes with responsibility. God expects us to submit to the principles of His authority found in Scripture e.g. that of the state, parental authority, work authority.

God allows humanity to choose to live in either freedom or bondage. If you choose to subject yourself to bondage of sin, the sovereignty of God means He respects your choice but holds you accountable. The consequences of our choices remain.

As human beings, our rights are not absolute and without consequence. Human rights are subject to sovereignty of God. They have limits and must be exercised with caution. What we consider is a right is subject to God’s sovereignty.

When you destroy your body, you are destroying the temple of God.

If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 3:17 (NRSV)

Don’t allow your freedom cause you to say or do things that will cause brethren to stumble. There are principles in God’s word that teach us how to exercise our freedom. We are not to infringe on the rights of others.

When we affirm that God has the right to exercise His sovereignty, we are allowing Him to be a Potter and us His clay. He fashions us according to His purpose and based on our choices – we can become vessels of honour or dishonour owing to the freedom of our wills to choose freedom or bondage.

If you live a defiant life, God will fashion you for a life of dishonour. He only does so in respect to our freedom of choice. Yet, He always creates an environment for us to be rescued.

God raised Pharaoh to demonstrate His power and sovereignty in delivering Israel from Egypt.

God is under no rule or law outside of Himself. He is a law unto Himself and has no obligation to explain Himself.

When the Amalekites waylaid the Israelites, God showed His power and destroyed them.

The sovereignty of God is founded on His oneness and unity. It is based on His self-existence. God is one. He reveals Himself in three persons who share the glory and majesty equally working together as one.

To you it was shown so that you would acknowledge that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him.

Deuteronomy 4:35 (NRSV)

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.

Deutronomy 6:4 (NRSV)

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Psalm 90:2 (NRSV)

God has no beginning and no end. He is from everlasting to everlasting. He is sovereign in the realms of nature and grace.

Creation is a result of His sovereignty not necessity. God was never desperate. He may have desired fellowship with man but it was never a need. To think otherwise is to say that God is not self-sufficient. The only person that is indispensable is God. Not man. That is why when you are proud, God demotes you and lifts another. We shouldn’t allow our uniqueness to stand in the way and make us think we are better than others. No one is indispensable.

When Lucifer abandoned the will of God, God created man to fulfill His will. When Saul became proud, God chose David to carry out His will.

God never replaces a person with their equivalent. The replacement always seems lesser than but God raises them up for His glory.

God had to raise Goliath to manifest David. Goliath is a type of vessel of dishonour. David’s battle started in the spirit not the physical when he remembered the encounters he had with God in the wilderness. Seasons of wilderness should be moments when one traverses into eternity.

God must be seen as sovereign to fight certain battles in this life. We don’t have to prove anything. As believers, we need to create spiritual environments where God can show Himself strong.
